Notes
The chamber opera The Last Flight – 12 regards on M. R. Š. was written in 2001. The libretto consists of authentic quotations from the statements of M. R. Štefánik, his friends and contemporaries, which gives the work a remarkable timeless ethos. In 2019, the composer recomposed music from some of the opera’s scenes into the suite L’Ultimo volo, as the opera’s co-author Egon Bondy originally called the opera.
“My first assignment was a solar eclipse on Mont Blanc. I was the first! – Congratulations! – I didn’t see anything. It was snowing…”
“Such a glow emanated from his person, magnetism spread from his clear eyes. … and he speaks, speaks, speaks only of the freedom of his country…
“And he made no secret of his pacifist views, and after the war he saw a future only in the United States of Europe…”
“The future of the whole world depends in no small measure on the organization of the peoples of Central Europe and the Balkans. The whole world wants peace. A glorious peace that must not be on the graves of small nations.” “And all will be well in Slovakia! Good…”
“I’m watching the world! I’m watching ours! My soul freezes … The world is dull, blind!”
“The war is won. But the establishment of a general peace, based on a just distribution of rights among all men and nations, is postponed to the distant future.”
“The natives of Tahiti were very fond of him, and called him Tatahiofetia – the white man who counts the stars.”
