Notes
The Slovak Philharmonic Choir is a prominent representative of Slovak professional choral art. It entered the musical scene in 1946 as the Czechoslovak Radio Mixed Choir. Its first years were led by its founder, conductor Ladislav Slovák. The post of choirmasters was held by several prominent personalities (Jozef Mária Dobrodinský, Š. Klimo, Pavol Prochádzka, Marián Vach, Jan Rozehnal, Blanka Juhaňáková).
Since 2014 it has been led by Jozef Chabroň. The refinement of expression, the sound balance of the vocal groups, as well as the interpretive readiness, reliability and exemplary artistic discipline are reflected in sovereign performances, which have been appreciated by many renowned conductors in their mutual cooperation.
In February 2023, the SFZ received the international award Oper! Awards 2023 in the category of Best Chorus. SFZ was recognized for its collaboration last year in the opera production The Queen of Spades with the Berlin Philharmonic and its chief conductor Kirill Petrenko at the Easter Festival in Baden-Baden, Germany, and concerts at the Berlin Philharmonic.
The male part of the choir performed Igor Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex oratorio in Switzerland (conductor J. van Steen). As part of the Beethoven Marathon 2022, the choir sang Symphony No. 9 at concerts in Germany and Serbia (conductor G. Feltz). In the 2022/2023 season, SFZ performed on concert stages in Berlin and Stuttgart. In May it will perform Rossini’s Stabat Mater in Istanbul. The male part of the choir will perform Schoenberg’s cantata Songs from Gurré in Prague and Litomyšl at the end of the season.
